Nope! You do not need a deep fryer to make your own doughnuts. Our mini doughnut recipe is baked in an oven, not fried. In our humble opinion, baked doughnuts are just as delicious, without the extra oil!
What is the best flour to use for doughnuts?
The best type of flour to use for doughnuts is all-purpose flour. While other flour options are available, all-purpose flour is the best choice to create the soft cake texture needed for delicious DIY doughnuts. For those that are celiac or gluten-sensitive, all-purpose gluten-free flour can be used.
Wait, is it doughnuts or donuts!?
One of the most controversial debates to ever hit the culinary world… how do you actually spell it!? Donuts or doughnuts? According to Grammarly, in the U.S. it’s both. However, doughnut is in fact the original historic spelling, with roots dating back all the way to the 19th century. Somewhere along the way, “donut” became the more commonly used spelling in the US. Perhaps Dunkin Donuts is to blame….
2 cups of all-purpose flour (can sub for all-purpose gluten free flour for celiac or gluten-sensitive)
1/2 cup cane sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/3 cup plant-based milk (almond, soy, coconut, oat or cashew)
1/4 cup of coconut oil (melted and cooled to room temperature)
3 tbsp molasses
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
gingerbread sugar spice mixture
Directions
Prepare your doughnut pan by lightly greasing with coconut oil. Preheat the oven to 400F.
In a small bowl, create the gingerbread sugar spice mix by combining all ingredients listed.
In a medium bowl mix together all the dry ingredients for the doughnuts (flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder.
Pour the gingerbread sugar spice mix into the rest of the dry ingredients, saving 1 tbsp for topping.
Pour all of the wet ingredients into your MOD Blend Pro.
Pour 1/3 of the dry ingredients into your MOD Blend Pro. Using the slider function, blend on low for 10-15 seconds and pause.
Continue, adding 1/3 of the dry ingredients at a time, blend on low for 10-15 seconds, scraping down the sides as needed. Blend until just combined and no flour pockets remain. The texture should be a thick batter.
Using a spoon, scoop the batter into your pre-greased doughnut tray. The recipe yields 12 doughnuts so your entire tray should be filled. Each doughnut mould should be filled until about level.
Wipe down the sides and area in between each doughnut mould. Bake for 10-11 minutes.
Remove the tray from the oven and allow the doughnuts to cool for 5 minutes before removing them from the tray.
While the doughnuts are still warm, dip each in the remaining gingerbread sugar spice mixture to top. Enjoy!
